Roundup Savings: Tiny Moves, Big Impact
Saving can feel difficult when your budget is already stretched by housing, groceries, transportation, and other everyday expenses. Even when you want to build a cushion, setting money aside may feel like one more task competing for your attention.
The Texans Debit Card Roundup program puts that task in the background. Routine debit card purchases contribute small amounts to a selected savings account, making it possible to build the habit without changing how you shop or remembering to make manual transfers.
WHAT IS TEXANS ROUNDUP?
Texans Roundup turns the change from each Texans debit card purchase into savings. When a purchase does not land on a whole dollar, the amount is rounded to the next dollar. At the end of the day, the accumulated difference is transferred from your Texans checking account to the savings account you selected.
For example, a $46.62 grocery purchase rounds to $47.00, adding $0.38 to that day’s roundup total. You continue making the purchases already in your routine, and the program handles the transfer automatically.
Because each deposit is connected to debit card activity, there is no separate amount to calculate or monthly transfer to remember. The program lets you save in small increments without requiring a major lifestyle change.
WHY MICRO-SAVINGS WORK
Traditional saving requires repeated decisions: how much to set aside, when to transfer it, and where the money will come from. When schedules and budgets are demanding, those decisions are easy to postpone.
Micro-savings remove much of that friction. The deposits are small, happen alongside purchases, and may feel less noticeable than moving a larger sum all at once.
Frequent deposits also create visible progress. Seeing the balance increase can reinforce the habit, build momentum, and make the next milestone feel more attainable.
WHERE THOSE TINY SAVINGS CAN GO
As the balance grows, it can be put toward several practical priorities.
EMERGENCY FUND
Roundups can add a steady stream of small deposits to an emergency fund for expenses such as car repairs, medical bills, or home maintenance. Keeping this money separate from everyday spending also makes it easier to see how much of a cushion you have.
SHORT-TERM GOALS
Use the balance to chip away at costs you expect within the next year, such as holiday gifts, a trip, or a replacement phone. Saving gradually can lessen the amount you need to cover from one paycheck or place on a credit card.
KIDS’ SAVINGS
The accumulated funds can also go toward school supplies, activities, braces, or future education expenses. Small deposits will not cover every cost, but they can create a useful starting point and establish a consistent saving habit .
GIVING OR CHARITY
Texans Roundup can also turn everyday purchases into charitable contributions. Members can choose from more than 75 participating nonprofits and charities, then direct their roundups to a selected organization. Roundups can go entirely toward charitable giving or be divided between a savings account and a chosen cause.
MAKING IT AUTOMATIC
The strength of Texans Roundup is its automation. Once enrolled, the program calculates the spare change from eligible debit card purchases and transfers the accumulated amount at the end of each day. There is no transfer schedule to maintain or recurring reminder to manage.
To participate, members need a Texans checking account with a debit card and a savings account. Enrollment is available through Online Banking or the Texans mobile app . From the Texans Roundup center, members can choose to direct their roundups to savings, charitable donations, or both, and update those preferences as needed.
In the Texans mobile app, tap More, then select Texans Roundup from the Financial Planning menu.
THE LONG-TERM EFFECT
Texans Roundup is not about making one large deposit or following a perfect plan. Its value comes from consistency. Small transfers made purchase after purchase can add up to noticeable progress and keep the saving habit active during busy months.
